One of Warsaw’s more unlikely demolitions is about to take place in Muranów, where the long-running Biedronka pavilion on al. Solidarności is set to disappear — not for another apartment block, but for a new public square.
Lachert’s vision returns to Muranów streetscape
The low-rise structure, built in the 1990s on land once occupied by a socialist-realist terrace designed by celebrated architect Bohdan Lachert, has already closed its doors. City officials confirmed the lease agreement with the pavilion’s owner has ended, clearing the way for demolition and a redesign of the area now officially known as Lachert Square.
The move forms part of wider changes along al. Solidarności, where new bike paths and rows of trees have recently appeared. According to Wola district authorities, an architectural competition for the future square will be announced soon, with completion expected no earlier than 2027.
The pavilion itself became a long-standing symbol of post-communist improvisation in Warsaw urban planning, replacing one of the original elements of Lachert’s postwar Muranów vision. With its removal, the city appears keen to restore more greenery and public space to the neighborhood.
