Warsaw is already radiating the festive atmosphere of the upcoming holiday season. This evening, as dusk falls, the grand Christmas tree at Castle Square will light up.
The illumination ceremony will be officiated by the city’s mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski. Alongside this, the magnificent decorative lighting on the Royal Route is ready to shine, transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly promenade on winter weekends.
The Old Town and Krakowskie Przedmieście have been adorned with charming holiday decorations, while the Castle Square awaits the spectacular lighting of its towering 27-meter Christmas tree. The tree, featuring over 40,000 energy-efficient lights, will be illuminated today, December 4, at 6:00 PM.
To reach Castle Square and the Old Town, visitors can hop on the specially decorated holiday-themed public transport. Trams, buses, and metro cars in festive designs are running from today, adding to the Christmas spirit across the city.
Stylish Illuminations Inspired by the Past
The Royal Route’s Christmas lights will also debut this evening, bringing a nostalgic touch to the streets. Drawing inspiration from the Warsaw of the 1950s and 60s, the decorations evoke the era of Stefan Wiechecki “Wiech,” Tadeusz Konwicki, and Agnieszka Osiecka. Retro elements include rotary telephones, street soda dispensers, shop scales, and classic Belweder televisions. Iconic Warsaw cars, Syrena models, and Ryś mopeds also feature prominently in this year’s display.
Beyond the Royal Route, other areas of the city will bask in festive light. Streets like Świętokrzyska, Długa, Freta, and Podwale, as well as landmarks like Barbican and the Multimedia Fountain Park, will sparkle with seasonal charm. Business sponsors have also contributed to the illumination of Nowy Świat.
Weekend Pedestrian Promenade
The illuminated Nowy Świat Street and Krakowskie Przedmieście will transform into a pedestrian zone on weekends. From De Gaulle Roundabout to Castle Square, the road closures are scheduled for December 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, as well as December 24-29, and January 4-6. On shorter stretches, including Świętokrzyska to Miodowa, pedestrian access will be extended during specific dates, such as December 23 and December 30 to January 3.
Enjoy Warsaw’s enchanting holiday season with its luminous charm and festive activities!
