Curious to learn more about the inspiration behind Drama Buddy and the vision for its future, we sat down with Ania for an exclusive interview.
Warsaw Insider: Your journey from a childhood spent at theater rehearsals to founding a theater app is fascinating! How did your childhood in the theater shape the way you see the future of theater today?
Ania: Above all, it’s the fact that I’ve developed this great passion for theatre, and I want to share it with others.
Warsaw Insider: Drama Buddy is based on the idea of a theater-loving friend. How do you ensure that Drama Buddy feels like a personal guide, not just an app?
Ania: I strive to make the app feel personal by showing that real people are behind it—people who attend theaters and review performances as if they’re doing it for their ‘friends.’ Of course, the brand’s language and design also play a big role in creating this connection.
Warsaw Insider: In your online Q&A, you mentioned recommending plays to friends in St. Petersburg. What has been your most unexpected discovery while curating recommendations for Drama Buddy?
Ania: That’s a tough question. Probably the most surprising thing was that our theatre expert in Warsaw had already kept a spreadsheet of all the performances she had seen, even before working with me, as if she had been preparing for Drama Buddy. I was shocked when I found out!
Warsaw Insider: You’ve spoken about your fascination with Berlin and Warsaw. How do the theater scenes in Warsaw and Berlin inspire different kinds of theatergoers, and what role does Drama Buddy play in connecting them?
Ania: I hope people will get comfortable using the app in one city and then, when traveling, feel inspired to explore theater in other cities too. Additionally, we plan to add more cities, making it possible to discover performances by, for example, the same director across different locations and countries.
Warsaw Insider: In what ways has the pandemic reshaped the way people engage with theater, and how is Drama Buddy adapting to these changes?
Ania: The pandemic, of course, had a significant impact on theater, but I’m glad to see everything returning to the offline experience. I want to help people reconnect with this tangible, in-person expression.
