This weekend will be special, not just in Warsaw but throughout Poland. The reason, of course, is National Independence Day, commemorating Poland’s regaining of independence in 1918 after 123 years of partitions. As you can probably guess, there will be plenty of events happening in the capital. What exactly is on the agenda?
At 12:00, the “Warszawianka” ensemble, along with those gathered at Castle Square, will take part in the “Independence to the Anthem” action. Starting at 1:00 PM, there will be stages at the courtyards of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Academy of Fine Arts, and from 2:00 PM, there will be a stage at the courtyard of the University of Warsaw. All attractions will be available free of charge. On the UW stage, you can listen to artists such as Kamil Bednarek, Sary James, and the duo Karaś/Rogucki. The Polish Dance Stage returns to the courtyard of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Four musical ensembles at Krakowskie Przedmieście 15/17 will present the dance history of four regions of Poland: Wielkopolska, Central Poland, Żywiecczyzna, and Rzeszowszczyzna. Traditional dances will also be taught! Starting at 1:00 PM.
Mayor Grzegorz Pietruczuk, along with the Council and Management of the Bielany District, the Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Warsaw, and the Bielański Cultural Center, invite you to a Patriotic Evening in honor of National Independence Day.
The program of the evening includes a concert “Paths to Independence” performed by the Warsaw Polonia Choir named after I. J. Paderewski (conducted by Z. Szablewski), poetry readings, collective singing of patriotic songs, and a meeting in the cafe (with winter tea and cake). Venue: Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Warsaw, ul. Przy Agorze 9. (The concert will take place after the evening Mass.) Free admission!
105 kites on top of Kopiec Cwil to commemorate the 105th anniversary of Poland’s regaining independence. It will be a beautiful spectacle! The event will take place on November 11th, in R. Kozłowski Park in Ursynów, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Exactly at noon, 105 kites in red and white will be released on Kopiec Cwil, accompanied by the singing of the Polish national anthem. During the event, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, workshops for creating kites in national colors and independence cockades will also be held.
A parade and historical picnic in Haller Square will take place next Saturday. Old cars and reenactors in period costumes will be waiting for you.
To prepare for the Praga celebrations, you can pick up a red and white cockade from the District Office. Cockades can be obtained from the ground floor information desk throughout the week.
As in every year for the past 33 years, the Independence Run will take place in the capital. The start and finish will be on Jana Pawła II Avenue, near Stawki Street. Runners will proceed along Jana Pawła II Avenue in a southerly direction towards Independence Avenue. The turnaround for the 10 km distance will be at Rakowiecka Street, and the route will continue in the opposite direction. Various starting zones, divided by time, will make it easier to achieve desired results. Because the route runs through the main streets of the capital, you can expect enthusiastic support from numerous spectators at every segment.
Depending on the distance covered, participants will have a “turnaround” at a different location. Nordic walkers will turn at Koszykowa Street, while young runners on the 1-mile route will turn at Nowolipie Street.
