Two nights of adventurous sounds at Jassmine
Two nights of adventurous sounds at Jassmine
Polish jazz has never been particularly interested in standing still. That restless spirit takes center stage this October when JAZZ PO POLSKU Festival returns to Jassmine for its third edition, bringing six concerts across two Sunday evenings, alongside photography and film.
The first night, October 18, offers a particularly wide-ranging snapshot of the scene. Fryderyk-winning Michał Aftyka Quintet opens with the intricate rhythms and collective improvisation of Frukstrakt, followed by Marek Piowczyk Trio, whose Baltic Experience draws inspiration from the shifting moods and landscapes of the Baltic Sea.
The evening then looks considerably further east. Trumpeter Piotr Damasiewicz joins Indian tabla player Pranshu Chatur Lal for a meeting of Indian raga, Carnatic traditions, Western improvisation and elements of Polish folk music. Running alongside the concerts will be an exhibition of Izabella Kędzierska’s photography documenting JAZZ PO POLSKU performances from 2022 to 2026.
Return on October 25 for perhaps the festival’s most intriguing proposition: Norwid. Pianist Kasia Pietrzko and saxophonist Maciej Kądziela lead a jazz interpretation of works by Cyprian Kamil Norwid, with acclaimed actor Andrzej Chyra giving voice to the poet’s words. Later, London-based guitarist Jakub Klimiuk brings his international quintet, before Lemańczyk / Golicki / Sarnecki Trio close the festival alongside Canadian-Polish trumpeter Jacques Kuba Séguin. Short films documenting JAZZ PO POLSKU’s international travels complete the program.
