There’s a particular kind of opening night that tells you something real about a restaurant — not the speeches or the celebrity guests, but whether the room has any genuine warmth to it. L’Osteria’s debut at Elektrownia Powiśle, which took place on 28 May, had it. By the time Italian-Polish singer Armando Quattrone took to the mic and the pizza started arriving at tables, the place felt less like a launch event and more like somewhere that had already been open for years.
That ease is, in many ways, the whole point. L’Osteria — a Munich-born chain now operating in over 200 locations across ten European countries — has spent the better part of three decades perfecting a particular kind of Italian hospitality: generous, unpretentious, and built around the idea that a good meal is always better shared. The brand calls its regulars amici della casa, friends of the house, and while that could easily tip into marketing fluff, the format largely backs it up.
The Powiśle location is the third in Poland, following restaurants at Centrum Praskie Koneser and San Park Piaseczno. Franchisee Adam Mularuk, who has been steadily building the brand’s local footprint since signing his agreement in 2022, says more openings are planned for next year. The choice of Elektrownia Powiśle makes obvious sense — the complex has a knack for attracting concepts that want to be taken seriously without taking themselves too seriously, and L’Osteria fits that brief well.
The room itself is warm and well-considered, with the open kitchen doing the theatrical work it’s supposed to: you can watch the pizzaiolo stretch dough by hand, which is either charming or a distraction depending on who you’re with. The signature pizza — 45cm, deliberately larger than the plate, orderable in two halves with different toppings — remains the thing to get. It’s a crowd-pleaser in the best sense: no caveats required. The fresh pasta is made in-house, the wine list pulls from Italian regions without being exhausting about it, and around a third of ingredients are sourced directly from Italy.
The opening night drew the expected crowd of media faces and social figures — Beata Tadla, Lili Antoniak, Karolina Woźniak among them — and the mood stayed easy throughout, which isn’t always a given at these things. L’Osteria also used the occasion to donate 5,000 PLN to Fundacja Serce Dziecka, a foundation supporting children with heart conditions, with Tomasz Ciachorowski — a long-time supporter of the charity — on hand to receive the cheque.
Whether L’Osteria becomes a genuine neighbourhood fixture or just another well-executed chain depends, as always, on consistency over time. But the bones are good, the location is right, and Warsaw has certainly seen worse Italian openings. Worth a visit — ideally with someone you can split a pizza with.
