Run, you suspect, as a form of self-expression, Argentinean chef Martin Gimenez Castro has injected his passion and personality into Ceviche Bar, a venue whose name is something of a misnomer – sure there’s ceviche (and magnificent it is), but there’s also so much more.
Cooking beneath a mural of Maradona (boo!), Gimenez Castro’s food is a collision of rich, zingy tastes and incredible sensations that push to the fore the rich, zingy tastes of Latin America.
Set inside a cool, urban space wedged inside the swanky Cosmopolitan skyscraper, find a concise menu that doesn’t muck about with anything but the best: take the starters, and in our case thin strips of beef tenderloin with ginger, sesame and apple.
Mains, and it’s the turn of Lomo Con Whiskey, a joy of beef, smoked mackerel, homemade bread with nuts and a rich whiskey sauce. Then, dessert, and for us a ‘mango pie’ coconut cream and a chia seed base – sophisticated, nuanced and an ideal end to a cracking meal.
The one complaint? Cocktails here are stunning, so it’s high time they started serving them during the day and not just during evening hours – pleeease!
