In an exclusive interview with Małgorzata Gągór (IG: goshika2019), Warsaw-based photographer delves into the intricacies of his distinctive style, revealing the spontaneous approach behind his captivating images that effortlessly blend luxury with everyday moments.
INSIDER: I would describe your photography as having a distinctive sense of style. Can you explain why I might think that?
Małgorzata Gągór: It’s a huge compliment, thank you. It could be my editing style, the way I frame certain scenes, or a combination of both, but each viewer brings their own perspective to a photo. For me, each photo I take is significant; each one tells a story from my perspective. I strive for my photos to evoke a certain association and emotion to the place.
Your photography exudes a sense of luxury, like something you’d find in a high-end travel magazine. What inspires you?
Inspiration is everywhere for me. Whether it’s the architecture, nature, people, or the time of day, I find beauty in all aspects of Warsaw. Rainy autumn days are as captivating to me as sunny spring ones. Sometimes it’s the play of sunlight, other times it’s the city lights at night. I constantly seek inspiration through long walks around the city.
Can you describe your relationship with Warsaw?
I’ve been living and working here with my family for nearly 20 years. Initially, the city felt crowded and noisy, but over time, I’ve developed a deep affection for Warsaw.
I appreciate how you capture people in your shots. Can you explain your process and how you choose locations to shoot?
I rarely plan specific locations for shooting; it’s mostly spontaneous. I discreetly photograph people, aiming to capture fleeting moments that resonate with me. I select shots that, in my opinion, best convey the atmosphere of that moment.
Do you have a favorite area of Warsaw that you’re drawn to for photography?
I don’t have a favorite. I frequent certain areas for their convenience, like Powiśle, but I believe every district of Warsaw offers unique photographic opportunities.
Do you have any guiding principles as a photographer?
I always strive to approach each photo in my own unique way.
What insights have you gained about your subjects and yourself through photography?
Photography is my passion; it helps me unwind, clear my mind, and relax. It’s taught me to view the world through a different lens, noticing details I might have otherwise missed. I’ve come to realize there’s no such thing as bad weather for a photo walk. Photography has introduced me to lesser-known parts of Warsaw, intriguing locations, and many fellow enthusiasts who share my love for the craft. I spend all my spare time either out with my camera, editing photos, or brainstorming new ideas
