The HoReCa sector has been among the hardest hit by the pandemic and the extended restrictions are expected to lead to a major surge in bankruptcies that will surpass anything seen during the first lockdown.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one bar owner told the Insider: “We’ve received nothing so far when it comes to money, and our landlord isn’t giving us a break – we’ve got nothing to lose anymore.”
While many invites have been sent and passed surreptitiously around private Facebook groups, some businesses have been open in their planned defiance of the regulations. Rallying under the hashtag #otwieraMY, the movement is growing with speed around the country ever since a restaurant in Cieszyn first made public their aim to welcome guests. And despite the desperate situation, humor has not been in short supply with one Gdańsk eatery promising free soup to any policemen that may visit.
