Midsummer wreaths drift along the river during Warsaw’s annual Wianki celebration
There’s a particular quality to light in Warsaw at midsummer — a softness that arrives late and lingers over the riverbanks long after sunset. During Wianki, held this year on Saturday, June 20, that glow becomes the backdrop to one of the city’s most atmospheric nights: a celebration of the summer solstice rooted in pagan Slavic tradition and reborn as a modern riverside gathering.
Centered around Multimedia Fountain Park and the boulevards beneath the Old Town, Wianki unfolds across bonfires, folk performances, outdoor concerts and the ritual floating of flower wreaths onto the river. The ancient belief was that the wreaths foretold love and fortune; today, the gesture feels less prophetic than poetic — a collective pause beside the water as summer officially begins.
As darkness settles, the festival shifts into concert mode. This year’s edition includes performances by CHRUST, O.S.T.R., NOSOWSKA, Anita Lipnicka and a late-night electronic set from Dutch producer Satori. Expect street theatre, Slavic craft workshops, wreath-making sessions and thousands gathering beside the river until well past midnight.
Midsummer’s Day Picnic begins at 13:00 at the Multimedia Fountain Park in the Old Town, with concerts on the main stage starting at 19:30.
