The 22nd Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival Has Begun!

Poland’s most important documentary film event—and the second largest in Europe—is back! The 22nd edition of Millennium Docs Against Gravity kicked off today, May 8, with gala openings at Multikino Złote Tarasy and Kinoteka in Warsaw.

Starting Friday, film lovers in Warsaw, Wrocław, Gdynia, Katowice, Poznań, Bydgoszcz, and Łódź can catch this year’s lineup of world-class documentaries.

Highlights to Catch

📍 Opening Films

  • Coexistence, My Ass! by Amber Fares – a darkly humorous look at Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts (sold out).

  • Ernest Cole: A Legend Rediscovered by Oscar®-nominated Raoul Peck – Polish premiere followed by a live Q&A.

📸 The festival also launched with the moving exhibition “Ernest Cole: Photographer in Exile” at the State Ethnographic Museum (on view until August 31), alongside the Polish premiere of Peck’s film.

🎤 Special Guest Talks at “The Best of MDAG”
Each evening at 8:30 p.m. (Atlantic Cinema, Room B), meet legendary filmmakers:

  • May 10: Lauren Greenfield – The Greatest of Kings + “Social Studies” series

  • May 11: David France – Welcome to Chechnya + Freeing Leonard Peltier

  • May 12: Guy Davidi – 5 Broken Cameras

  • May 13: Asif Kapadia – 5 Broken Cameras + 2073

  • May 14: Gunnar Hall Jensen – Gunnar Seeks God + Portrait of a Confused Father

  • May 15: Remi Grellety – The Soundtrack of a Coup

  • May 17: Andres Veiel – Beuys. Art is Revolution + Riefenstahl

  • May 18: Jaśmina Wójcik – Symphony of the Ursus Factory + King Matt the First

🎞 Mark Cousins’ Anti-Masterclass
On Saturday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the State Ethnographic Museum, join acclaimed director Mark Cousins for a playful, thought-provoking “anti-masterclass” hosted by MDAG’s Artistic Director, Karol Piekarczyk. Admission is free.

🌍 New Collaboration: FIPRESCI x MDAG
To mark its 100th anniversary, the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) launches a new partnership with MDAG. Celebrate with a special screening of Welcome to Chechnya introduced by FIPRESCI president Ahmed Shawky and followed by a Q&A with director David France.
