Walking through the square, you can almost feel the weight of everything that has happened here – royal celebrations, protests, wartime destruction and the city’s remarkable rebirth. Today, it’s one of the most recognizable spots in the capital and if you’re visiting for the first time, there’s no better place to start.
At the heart of the square stands Sigismund’s Column, a monument to King Sigismund III Vasa, who moved Poland’s capital to Warsaw. More than just a symbol of the city, it’s a meeting point, a landmark and one of the most photographed places in Warsaw! It has survived wars, uprisings and even being knocked over, yet it still stands tall, keeping watch over the square.
Right next to it, the Royal Castle dominates the scene. Once home to Polish monarchs, it’s now a museum that takes visitors on a journey through Poland’s royal past. The castle’s history is just as dramatic as the square itself – it was almost completely destroyed during World War II but was meticulously rebuilt, brick by brick. Inside, you’ll find grand rooms filled with intricate details, from the impressive Throne Room to the beautifully decorated royal apartments showcasing 18th-century art and furnishings. The castle is also a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, concerts and events throughout the year. And if you need a break from the city buzz, the nearby Royal Gardens offer a quiet, green escape.
For a different perspective on Castle Square, head up to the viewing terrace of St. Anne’s Church Bell Tower. Climbing the stairs might be a bit of a workout, but the view at the top is worth it. From here, you get a breathtaking panorama of the Old Town, the Royal Castle, and the Vistula River stretching into the distance. Amazing, right?
