A Polish hiker has been detained by authorities after accidentally starting a forest fire that quickly raged out of control. The unidentified mountaineer lost his bearings whilst rambling in the mountains near the Montenegrin town of Bar and allegedly started a fire to signal for rescue.

However, a combination of dry vegetation and wind meant that the fire soon engulfed the forest, threatening numerous local villages. The hapless Pole now faces charges of endangering public safety.
